Breaking News: MMO’s MMOre Addictive, Disruptive

MMO's MMORE Addictive, Disruptive
From Cognitive Daily

A study1 by Joshua M. Smyth, Ph.D., from October 2007, concludes (according to a summary from Cognitive Daily) that MMORPG’s are more consuming and disruptive than other game types.

There is occasionally debate about whether MMORPG’s are addictive and disruptive. Debate which I find rather silly. Of course they are! I know precious few MMO players that haven’t on occasion, let their game interfere with their life.

I’m not suggesting that MMORPG’s are as bad as the stereotypical addictive activities like smoking, drinking, or doing nose candy on the belly of a two-bit whore. But the truth is, MMORPG’s (like many of the better activities in life) have elements that can, for some individuals, at some times, become a problem.

It seems to me that the very basis of MMO gameplay is an implementation of operant conditioning designed to reinforce the desire to continue playing.

I’m not at all surprised by the study’s result.
